The traditional fishing boats of Dominica have a long canoe-like shape derived from the original Amerindian dugouts that were hollowed out from the trunk of the Gommier tree. Like those in St Lucia, they also have a protruding wooden blade at the base of the bow for stability. These boats are not designed for the high open sea.
The fishermen who use them can be seen carrying out fish-pots daily, usually to catch small fish.
The Village of Scott's Head lies at the southernmost point of Dominica, in an area called 'Cachacrou' by its earliest inhabitants, the Amerindians.
